What moves (between) us with Mihai Mihalcea

We begin from a suspicion that cannot really be tested in theory, only explored and lived through: presence does not belong to a body. It is an unstable effect that emerges between bodies, shaped by the ways they breathe, perceive and affect one another, as well as by whatever circulates between them without ever being fully controlled or evenly distributed.

Co-presence is not a heightened state or a performed intensity. It describes a condition in which what each body does becomes vulnerable to, and dependent on, what comes from others and from the environment they share — and on how these influences are received, carried or redistributed.

Within this framework, co-presence and co-breathing become both working concepts and the ground for a process in which breath is the first site of exchange. A continuous flow that belongs to no one, involving connection and exposure, transfer and consumption at the same time.

From here, attention shifts towards perception and movement. The workshop develops situations for exploring how action can become a continuous adjustment to what moves between bodies: to what is lost, accumulated, imposed or passed on in the course of that exchange.

Throughout the workshop, breath, fatigue, rhythm and attention become shared materials. What emerges is not directed towards representation. Instead, the work temporarily reorganises the ways bodies coexist — how they support one another, set limits, depend on one another or wear one another out — without pretending that these relations can simply be escaped.

The workshop takes place both inside the gallery and outdoors, combining practical sessions, conversations and movement through different parts of the city. No previous experience in dance or performance is required.

Mihai Mihalcea is a choreographer and performer, and one of the figures who has shaped contemporary dance in Romania since the 1990s. In his practice, the body appears as a site of memory, negotiation and tension, traversed by social contexts, learned gestures and personal histories. His work moves between choreography, performance, artistic research and cultural intervention, and includes performances, installations and performative situations presented in Romania and internationally.
