06 – 28 September 2025, Bastion 3, Timișoara

curated by Teodora Talhoș
This September, we open a new season with courage and solidarity. Join us at Bastion for a group exhibition that confronts a brutal reality and transforms it into a space for resistance and reflection.
“The starting point for this exhibition was a decision that went largely unnoticed, but which gave me a knot in the pit of my stomach. Half a year ago, shortly after the US presidential election, Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, “relaxed” its conduct policies to better align with America’s new problematic political direction. What exactly did that mean? That hateful language directed at ethnic and sexual minorities or women could be used freely, without fear of censorship. Among other things, women could be referred to as “household objects” and “property.”
Both the unethical politicians who recently came to power in the US and several European countries, and the right-wing political currents that propelled them to the top of the polls, directly and indirectly promote the wave of sustained hatred against women.
Speaking of the geopolitical space we find ourselves in, Romania is facing a severe issue, stemming from a collective mindset with double standards and an ignorant political attitude. In the first half of 2025 alone, there were over 30 cases of femicide, a number that is increasing weekly. These brutal and grotesque cases show that it does not matter what social class you belong to, where you live, or whether you have already taken legal steps against the aggressor. The state shrugs its shoulders and moves far too slowly. The lives and safety of over half the country’s population are of no concern to it.
We often forget that women who have lost their lives or who continue to suffer psychological and physical violence are not just statistics. They are mothers, sisters, friends, and colleagues. They have a past and a future, aspirations, hopes. Comparing them to household objects, which you can use as you please and then abandon in a corner of the house, where they lie silent until their next use, is not only petty, but also reflects a current reality. The emancipation movements of the last 100 years have brought us, women, more visibility and the right to decide over our own bodies and destinies. Even if these rights are not distributed equally across the globe, or even between ethnic groups and social classes, here we are again in the position of fighting for something basic, something we took for granted. As poet and human rights activist Audre Lorde wrote, “Your silence will not protect you.” It will not protect you from violence or unpleasantness, nor will it protect those around you from the same fate.
In this spirit of transformation, we invited four young female artists from Romania to reflect on how they perceive the current complicated situation, but above all to use their art to give voice to their deepest concerns and anxieties, which many of us face.
The exhibition is not about victims or anonymous violence. It is about the many facets of the female experience, both domestic and urban, and at the same time an invitation to dialogue, reflection, and solidarity. – Teodora Talhoș
